Systematic review of nicotine replacement therapy

Mike Bradburn with Marcus Munafo Lucy Bowes and Sean David (Oxford)

In this systematic review, we performed a meta-analysis to assess whether response to the NRT patch among smokers differs by gender. Although a small number of studies have suggested females are less likely to benefit (i.e. stop smoking) with the NRT patch, the meta-analysis of data from randomised trials did not find evidence to suggest this to be the case.

Based on ten RCTs with available data, the odds of NRT-assisted response among males was 21% higher overall than in females at twelve months, but evidence of a real difference is weak (p=0.38).
