The Centre for Statistics in Medicine (CSM) was established within the Institute of Health Sciences in Headington, Oxford in September 1995 under the directorship of Professor Doug Altman. The Centre relocated to Wolfson College Annexe in April 2005.

The CSM incorporates the Cancer Research UK Medical Statistics Group (MSG) (which comprises separate support and research teams), an NHS R&D funded Statistical Support Team and also hosts the EQUATOR initiative. Members of all groups within the CSM participate in training activities.  The Centre is one of the groups that make up the Oxford NHS R&D Academic Unit, along with the Unit of Health-Care Epidemiology, Health Services Research Unit, and Health Economics Research Centre (all part of the University Department of Public Health). The CSM is affiliated to the Department of Oncology (University of Oxford).
