Making a Difference in Health Care Research

Oxford

The Centre for Statistics in Medicine (Director: Professor Doug Altman) collaborates in health care research, conducts applied statistical research and runs training courses/workshops for both health care workers and statisticians.

Statisticians within the CSM are involved in many collaborative projects with clinicians and other researchers in Oxford and further afield, some working across the medical spectrum and others focusing on cancer. The CSM is part of two UKCRN registered trials units: the Oxford Clinical Trials Research Unit (OCTRU: specialising in trials in cancer) and the Oxford Clinical Trials Unit for Mental Illness (OCTUMI). Other statisticians within the CSM work primarily on a programme of methodological research, in particular relating to studies of diagnosis and prognosis. The CSM also carries out a programme of work aiming at improving the reporting of research and hosts the EQUATOR initiative. Members of all groups within the CSM participate in training activities.
